What to expect from a nose job before and after

Rhinoplasty, generally known as nose surgery, is a popular choice for patients who are dissatisfied with their nose size or shape. However, in addition to the well-known cosmetic advantages of the operation, rhinoplasty has grown into many more functional applications, such as enhancing nasal function after a traumatic injury or illness or helping with breathing issues that impair sleep and exercise capacity.

The purpose of rhinoplasty is to revise the nose to the desired appearance and functionality of the patient, keeping in mind the type of skin and the whole architecture of the face. Our plastic surgeons combine the rhinoplasty science and art to provide successful, lasting results to the patients.

Facts

As a general rule, rising rhinoplasty candidates should be completed. For example, facial growth in adolescents and young adults may affect nose look and function over time. The exception will be paediatric patients with a birth defect on the face, such as cleft palate. In addition , patients should be in good physical health and should not smoke, as smoking can result in poor blow flow and increase the risk of tissue damage. Rhinoplasty is possible for teenagers with full parental consent, who recognise the procedure. Ideally girls should be at least 15 or 16 years of age before proceeding; boys should be at least 17 or 18 years old. This procedure will boost not only the self-confidence of a patient but also the breathing if paired with a septoplasty.

The surgeon should ensure before rhinoplasty that the patient completely understands the operation and its complications and benefits. While rhinoplasty is a safe operation, it is vital to have an expert perform the surgery.

If rhinoplasty aims include promoting improved breathing as well as enhancing appearance, the procedure may include removing the nasal hump, reshaping the tip of the nose, reshaping or resizing the nostrils or increasing or decreasing the overall size and projection of the nose.

Rhinoplasty typically takes between 1.5 and 3 hours, and is generally an outpatient operation. In "closed rhinoplasty," incisions are made within the nostrils – a technique which has a limited ability to alter. In "open rhinoplasty," an incision is made between the nostrils and inside the nostrils, through the tissue. These incisions heal very quickly, and are difficult to see.

If additional cartilage is required to increase the nose it is mostly taken from the nasal septum of the patient. This cartilage must be extracted from an ear or rib in secondary or revision rhinoplasty, which is used to fix deformities caused by an earlier operation, although sometimes permitted cartilage can also be used. Revision rhinoplasty is a more complicated procedure to perform because of the cartilage needs and scarring risk, so it's crucial that it's performed by a highly trained plastic surgeon.

Nonsurgical rhinoplasty is a series of office-based procedures which are performed while the patient is waking. Injectable hyaluronic acid fillers are used without an invasive surgery to change the shape and size of the nose.

During Rhinoplasty Recovery

Most patients experience mild to moderate pain following surgery which can be managed with medication. However, due to potential swelling under the eyes and the use of a splint, the first part of the healing period can be very uncomfortable at work and in social settings. After rhinoplasty, patients may continue to wear splints inside and outside the nose for around a week to protect the nasal bones and cartilage. Patients should also avoid physical exercise such as jogging or swimming for two to three weeks, and avoid wearing glasses for four or five weeks.
