Breast Lift - What should I do
As with any
surgical procedure, a breast lift includes skin incisions. Incisions put you at
risk of scarring the way the skin creates new tissues and healing the wound.
There are
however ways to minimize scarring before, during, and after a lift to the
breast.
Eventually working with an experienced surgeon will reduce the risk of complications which are known to cause scarring. We will also teach you how to protect and treat your post-surgery skin.
How the scar will be look like?
Incisions
usually made during cosmetic surgery are small. You may be left with a red
raised line along the edges of the incision, immediately after the wounds
heal. The color of the scar will fade over time to pink and then to white.
Often, they should flatten out in shape. The lightening of the scar will take
up to a year to several months after surgery.
In people with
extremely dark or light skin, scarring tends to be most visible. The scars can
also become more noticeable if they are subject to direct exposure to sunlight.
Make sure to wear sunscreen daily.
As a rule of thumb, horizontal cuts are typically less visible along the crease of the breast than incisions made vertically along the breast.
Over time, will the wounds change?
Your scars will
inevitably change over time, as the healing process continues. They should keep
fading and flattening, with proper care.
It is also
important to avoid behaviors which could make the scars of the breast lift
worse. Avoid the following:
·
Scrubs. This is particularly the case, since the wound heals.
·
Smoking. To reduce complications, quit smoking at least one
month before to surgery.
·
Stop lifting heavily in the first six weeks of postsurgery.
·
Tanning. For tanning. That will make the markings more
noticeable and darken the scar tissue.
Could you remove the scars?
If your breast
lift scars are serious, your Cosmetic Surgeon may prescribe skilled scar
removal treatments.
Some of these
procedures leave new scars in place of scars from the breast lift. The newly
formed scars would, in theory, be less severe.
·
Punch grafting. It means taking a small part of the skin from another
region of your body and inserting it in place of the raise scar on your breast.
·
Tissue expansion. This works by stretching out the skin around the scar of
the breast lift to even reach out to the region.
Certain skin care procedures can help to lower the scarring appearance. Normally, these treatments do not lead to new wounds but they can make your skin more sensitive to the light. That can result in hyperpigmentation.
Having a breast
lift would probably result in a certain amount of scarring, but you should not
expect significant scars.
The best way to
avoid serious scarring is to find a surgeon who has experience in surgery of
this kind. Trying to save money on someone who doesn't have as much experience
in the long run could cost you more.
You can also
take steps at home to avoid more scarring and to reduce the appearance of your
wounds. Your surgeon might give you a few tips, too.
Keep in mind that your skin needs some time to recover. Incision wounds will take a bit longer to fade. But if home care interventions do not improve and you are disappointed with their appearance, see your dermatologist. We can give you advice on any next steps.
